Psychologist and professor Melanie Joy will be in Cambridge (MA) tomorrow, January 13, at 7 p.m., to talk about her book “Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows: An Introduction to Carnism.” The lecture will take place at Porter Square Books.

She will talk about her research on why people are comfortable eating certain animals and not others.

“Like most people, I grew up eating meat. I also grew up with a dog — a German Shepherd Lab mix named Fritz, who was my best friend throughout my childhood,” Melanie said recently in The Daily Tail. “And like most people, I didn’t think about how I could love my dog, Fritz, yet eat other animals”

“The reason we love some animals and eat others, I discovered, is not because some animals are more lovable or edible. We have learned to see the world through the lens of carnism.”

Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows: An Introduction to Carnism” is Melanie’s second book. Her first book, “Strategic Action for Animals,” is a guide for improving animal advocacy.

In case you’d like to attend but cannot make it tomorrow, Melanie will also make a presentation at the Harvard Coop Bookstore, also in Cambridge, on January 29 at 7 p.m.

    • I read her book, actually. I wanted to go, but couldn't. Had a terrible night yesterday. Our heating broke, and Martin and I spent the evening trying to fix it. It was 10F here in Cambridge. Murphy's Law.

      Melanie's book is great. She explains how we, because of culture passed along through generations, get used to seeing meat a natural dish in our plates. I became a vegetarian four years ago and would love to become vegan, but it's been hard. Her book was very inspiring, so after reading I started a personal program in which I eat 2 vegan daily meals out of three. Generally my vegan meals are breakfast and lunch.
