Having dogs feels like having kids – 1&2

By Daniela Caride Publisher

If you love animals, you cannot miss this BBC movie, “The Secret Life of the Dog.” It is divided into six 10-minute chapters. I was tempted to post only two a day, but I couldn’t stop watching. So I decided to publish three posts in a row, with two chapters in each. If you don’t feel like watching them all now, visit us later. The videos are also available on our sidebar (to your right). Enjoy!

I’m always intrigued by the fact that researchers only find out things about pets that we, pet owners, already know, like the fact that we may lead a healthier life if we own a pet and that we can understand each other.

But this series of videos present new evidence on how these wonderful interactions happen.

New research demonstrates that dogs can understand us more deeply than any other animal. And it seems this communication works both ways. Apparently we can understand their barks and whines, too.

Another amazing finding is that dogs and owners release a hormone called oxytocin when sharing love. When released, oxytocin helps human mothers establish the positive feelings between them and their babies, and produces a sense of familiarity with a complete stranger. Dogs and people go through the same process.

I always felt like my dogs’ mother. Now I know they feel the same way. But I would go further and say that I have that same relationship with my cats.

We, pet owners, don’t need scientific proof that our relationships with pets, be them dogs, cats, horses, rabbits or birds, are that special. We just know it.
