When you look at the Cane Corso dog breed, you look at a large dog, powerful, Mastiff breed of Italian origin. In the past several years, the Cane Corso pup has grown increasingly popular. They are praised for being loyal, protective dogs. Yet, they are also highly athletic. But how fast is a Cane Corso?

This might surprise you, but a couple of Cane Corso dogs have managed to achieve speed close to 30mph. Now, that is not an average speed.

Let’s take a look deeper into the discussion.

How Do We Measure Speed?

The American Kennel Club began organizing the Fast CAT(Coursing ability test) tournament in 2016. The tournament is a timed 100-yard dash where dogs run one at a time. They reach higher speed by chasing a lure.

The popularity of the event has increased. It is a very interesting event. But there are other ways to measure speed as well.

Speaking of the American Kennel Club Fast CAT tournament, there have been five impressive Cane Corso run speed results.

The top is Jean Lafitte, a male Cane Corso that reached 29.79 mph. Princess, a female Cane Corso reached 29.02 mph, while the fifth best result is from Jacopo, another male dog running at 27.66 mph.

We have to mention, that the list reflected the average speed of each dog’s three fastest runs for the year selected. If the dogs have not completed 3 Fast CAT runs, they do not appear on the list.

And since not every Cane Corso owner will enter the event, we have to ask, how fast is a Cane Corso really?

Average Speed of Cane Corso

The results of tournaments often measure the top speed, where the judges clock milliseconds when the dog is at its peak.

But that is not the same as average speed. Now, when we talk about the fastest dog in the world, we are also talking about top speed.

Here is an example, Usain Bolt reached a top speed of 28 mph when he ran the 100-meter dash in 9.58 seconds. But his average speed was around 23 mph.

The average running speed of the Cane Corso breed is between 20 and 23 mph. And yes, there are Cane Corso dogs that can reach higher than that.

Does Cane Corso Enjoy Running?

This working dog is highly athletic and has high energy levels. So, you might be wondering do they enjoy running.

Well, while they can make great hiking companions due to their high stamina and sense of adventure, they should not run as much.

Yes, the famous Italian Mastiff might love to run every now and then. But a large dog breed should not run until he reaches full skeletal maturity, which is between 18 and 24 months of age.

Why You Shouldn’t Jog With Your Cane Corso

Now let’s talk about why you shouldn’t take your Cane Corso puppy jogging with you. Large dog breeds are highly prone to hip dysplasia. This health condition can affect any dog, but large dogs, due to their size, are at higher risk.

This condition affects the skeletal system where the ball and socket of the hip do not fit or develop properly. Instead, they rub and grind against one another, leading to deterioration over time and loss of function of the joint.

It is a highly painful condition that is even more painful to large dog breeds. Some of the signs include:

  • Lameness
  • Limping with no obvious sign of injury
  • Cracking and popping sounds from the hip joints
  • Abnormal sitting positions
  • Trouble getting on and off furniture
  • Trouble climbing stairs
  • Laying down more than usual

Comparison to Other Dog Breeds

We cannot say that the Cane Corso is anywhere near the top of the fastest dog breeds list. But the top speed of the Cane Corso is better than some other guardian dogs like the Rottweiler and German Shepherd. And the dog has a decent average running speed as well.

The French Bulldog, the most popular dog breed, for example, reaches only 10 mph as top speed. The fastest dog in the world is the Greyhound, reaching 45 mph and even maintaining it for a while.
