If you are looking for the perfect portable and friendly companion dog, you cannot go wrong with a Toy Poodle puppy. Simply put, there are rarely any if any, dogs that check more boxes than the Toy Poodle for a small dog. Do you want to know how big Toy Poodles get?

When raising a Toy Poodle, you will see your dog will reach new milestones as it ages and grows. And it might be a good idea to keep track of your dog’s progress.

Even if you do not do it, we have compiled a growth chart to help you understand how big your dog will get.

How Big Do They Get?

Toy Poodles are the smallest members of the Poodle family. According to The American Kennel Club, there are three types of poodles. Those are Standard Poodle, Miniature Poodle, and Toy Poodle.

Now, you might find things like Teacup Poodle, Mini Poodle, or Medium Poodle. But they are not recognized by the AKC.

When they are born, Toy Poodles weigh no more than a single pound. They will reach a weight between 2 and 3 pounds when they are three months old. In the first few months, these puppies grow very fast.

With that in mind, by the time they get to their six-month, they gain most of their adult height and weight. In most cases, a Toy Poodle puppy will stop growing at 9 months, and grow only marginally up to one year.

Because of their small size, they might not be suitable options for a family with small children. Babies can easily grab them, and they might think of this small dog as a toy. You do not want that.

How Big Is An Adult Toy Poodle?

According to the standard set by The American Kennel Club, a Toy Poodle should stand at a maximum of 10 inches when reaching its adult size. But it is rare to see dogs standing that tall. Because of the selective breeding, they are relatively smaller, and reach between 6 and 8 inches, weighing between 5 and 10 pounds.

Toy Poodles should reach their adult stature by 1 year of age. Often, they stop growing when they are 9 months of age.

Speaking of their weight, sometimes, they can weigh as little as four pounds. When your Toy Poodle weighs more than 9 pounds, that is considered an obese dog.

Does Gender Matter?

Yes, as with other dogs in the canine world, gender does matter. Male Toy Poodles weigh more than female Toy Poodles. The difference is relatively small, but apparent nevertheless. With that in mind, males grow between 7 and 10 pounds, while female grows between 6 and 9 pounds.

Males grow taller as well.

When Are They Fully Grown?

To be fair, this is a challenging question. We answered the question about how big Toy Poodles get. Well, because their adult size ranges up to ten inches and under, it can be challenging to notice when they have stopped growing.

Usually, small dog breeds stop growing between 6 and 8 months of age. Medium-sized dogs, on the other hand, like the Miniature Poodle, stop growing at 12 months, and can sometimes grow up to 2 years of age.

The Growth Tapering Effect

Here is a fun fact. Puppies of this breed have an exponential growth rate within the first few weeks. They continue with their increased growth rate at a slower pace until they reach four months of age.

And from there, the growth tapers off significantly. Sometimes, it is easy to mistake the slowed growth for being a fully-grown dog. But it isn’t until six months of age at least.

That being said, here is a quick chart to help you understand the growth rate of this toy breed.

Number of weeks Height Weight
4 4 – 5 inches 1 – 3 pounds
8 6 inches 1.5 – 4 pounds
12 7 inches 2 – 4.5 pounds
16 8 inches 2.5 – 6 pounds
24 10 inches 3 – 8 pounds
48 10 inches 4 – 9 pounds

How Much Should You Feed Them?

When it comes to feeding smaller dogs, it is important that you find kibble, or dog food, approved by the Association of American Feed Control Officials.

You should feed your dog food appropriate for its age. For example, a puppy formula until 12 months, and then an adult formula.

Since this Poodle breed is of tiny size, you can feed them a maximum of two times per day. They should eat three times per day until they are 4 months old. From there, you can reduce the schedule to two times per day.

As for the calorie intake, that can differ from one dog food to another. Every food has labels, specifically mentioning how much you can feed a dog depending on its size and age.

If you are a prospective Poodle owner, we have to mention that these dogs are not cheap. They can cost between $1,500 and $3,000 initially.

The good news is that further costs are low. They do not eat as much and are generally healthy breeds. Now, you might some mixed breeds that cost more.

How Do They Compare To Other Poodles?

As we said before, The American Kennel Club recognizes three sizes of Poodles. The other two are Miniature Poodle and Standard Poodle.

The Miniature Poodle stands between 10 inches and 15 inches, while the Standard Poodle reaches between 18 and 20 inches.
