If you are a fan of small dog breeds, chances are, you might consider bringing a Shih Tzu dog breed home. But while these tiny puppies look cute and adorable, they might not be the best for you. Unfortunately, not all people feel good about Shih Tzus. Some people even ask why Shih Tzu is the worst dog.

Now, you might be wondering, how can that be? Aren’t these adorable puppies all over Instagram and social media? Influencers are in love with them. They dress them up in different outfits. Well, as with any dog breed, there are good sides and then there are bad sides.

Today, we will look at both. Hopefully, by the end, you will have a better idea of whether a Shih Tzu puppy is the right choice for your family.

Why Do People Think Shih Tzus Are The Worst?

Let’s start with the practical reason first. Some people do not like small dog breeds. These small dogs can be yappy, and excessive barking can be rough on your ears. And because they are so small, it is difficult for them to reach certain places. That being said, here is a breakdown of some of the challenges of owning a Shih Tzu breed.

High Maintenance Grooming

There is always good news and bad news. The good news is that Shih Tzu does not shed as much. They have long and luxurious coats. Some might say they are hypoallergenic, but they are not 100% that.

The bad news is that their precious coat requires plenty of maintenance. Shih Tzus need daily brushing to prevent matting and tangles in their fur. This breed is also more prone to skin issues and allergies. Without regular grooming, your dog is at higher risk of infections.

Those regular visits to a professional groomer tend to pile up the bills.

Stubborn

One thing any Shih Tzu owner will tell you, these dogs can be quite stubborn. After all, they were once part of royalty. As royal dogs, they think that it is your job to pamper their needs.

These dogs have a reputation for being stubborn and resistant to training. That can be frustrating for new pet owners who want an obedient dog. Back in the day, when they were part of Chinese royalty, they were known as the lion dog. Their name translates to that.

You might think this small and adorable breed will gladly follow your lead. But that is not the case. These dogs are difficult to manage.

Not Suitable For An Active Lifestyle

Now this is just a lifestyle preference. But if you want an active lifestyle, this pet might not be the best option for you. These small dogs have very short legs. They are not built for long walks, hikes, or similar physical activities.

Shih Tzus can tire easily and is prone to overheating in hot weather. These pets are apartment dogs. They love to spend the day inside and chill.

Small Dog Syndrome

Now, a Shih Tzu might not be a Chihuahua in terms of small dog syndrome. But they can be bossy, nippy, aggressive, and show similar behavior issues if/when not properly socialized.

Like many other small dogs, they are prone to the small dog syndrome. And it is a real thing.

Not Suitable For Young Children

Shih Tzus are not your pet that you can “abuse” at home. You cannot touch, grab, or anything else. They do not like to play with small children as much. Additionally, their small size is a problem. They can get injured by rough play or accidental falls.

Desperate For Love

If you want a Velcro dog, but one with an attitude, then this is it. But if you cannot stand a dog that follows you around at every step, stay away.

The best word to describe the Shih Tzu breed is desperate. These puppies seek human approval in every situation. They are clingy dogs that follow their dog owner all over the place. Being left alone? Not a chance!

Can Have A Cat-like Behavior

Shih Tzus are awkward. They are so attached to their pet owners. You might even feel like you are suffocating from too much attention.

The worst part is these dogs demand the same level of dedication in return. They are like cats in that regard. They think they are the boss of the house and want your full attention and dedication.

Hilarious Haircuts

Shih Tzus are stars of Instagram and social media lately. Some people love their haircuts, others think they are hilarious. That top knot hairstyle might look cute and adorable, but for some people, it is just gross.

Are these pets dogs or are they toys? Well, you know the answer, right?

The Hideous Underbite

Like many other brachycephalic dog breeds, think Boston Terrier, Lhasa Apsa, English Bulldog, French Bulldog, and more, Shih Tzus have an underbite that looks hideous. It is a sign of deformation.

But it is not only ugly, it is also unhealthy. The underbite can cause a lot of health issues in your dog, including difficulty breathing, heart disease, and more.

Not Funny At All

If you think that jumping around and begging humans to play is attractive for dog owners, think again. It is not. There are very few people who think that is funny. And probably, they own a Shih Tzu.

For them, Shih Tzus are hilarious clown dogs. But most people do not find that funny at all.

They Are Yappy

You would think that a dog that loves to sleep all day would be quiet, right? Wrong! These puppies can talk. And they do not seem to shut up.

Their enthusiastic yapping and excessive barking can be quite painful for your ears.

Separation Anxiety

Last, but not least, why Shih Tzu are the worst dogs is because of their separation anxiety. While they are famous for their affectionate and loyal nature, these dogs are prone to separation anxiety. And the same trait that makes them great companions, makes them prone to separation anxiety as well.

It can be stressful for your dog to be left alone. They do not want it when you leave the house without them. It is essential that you provide proper training, including crate training so that your dog feels safe and secure at home alone.
