Debating between a male dog and a female dog has always been interesting. Dog owners and pet parents around the world take into consideration everything before they adopt a puppy. And sometimes, yes, even the gender of the dog breed comes into consideration. Is there a difference between male vs female Great Pyrenees?

Yes, there are some subtle differences, namely in size and temperament. These differences are more noticeable when males are still intact.

Today, we will take a look at the comparison between a male Great Pyrenees and a female Great Pyrenees dog. Now, while there are subtle differences, we have to note, it is completely different for each dog.

Get To Know The Breed

Before we can talk about the male vs female Great Pyrenees debate, we have to talk about the history and origin of the Great Pyrenees breed.

This large breed originated from the mountains between France and Spain. They are called Pyrenees Mountains, which is why at one point, the canine was called Pyrenean Mountain Dog. But over time, the name Great Pyrenees prevailed.

Originally, this canine was bred as a livestock guardian dog. Their gentle and protective nature made them great guardians. These dogs had the stamina, energy, and will to roam large parts of the land to protect their territory.

Their large size and thick coat allowed them to withstand the cold, rugged conditions of the Pyrenees Mountains.

While they were mainly used as a livestock guardian dog back in the day, nowadays, this pet has found its way to households all over the world.

They are praised for being gentle, affectionate, loyal, and docile. Do not let their large size fool you. This large dog is an amazing family pet and will do amazingly with children.

Male vs Female Great Pyrenees Size

If you look at the Great Pyrenees growth chart, you will notice there are differences between males and females. And it is like that with all dog breeds, not just the Great Pyrenees dog.

According to standards set by the American Kennel Club, the male Great Pyrenees dog stands between 27 and 32 inches, and weighs around 100 pounds and more. On the other hand, the female dog grows between 25 and 29 inches and weighs up to 85 pounds.

That is a sizeable difference, won’t you say? If you look at different dog breeds, you will notice the female always grows smaller than the male.

And that is the case here as well. If you want a larger dog, you might go with a male one. But for those who would love a smaller version of the working dog, the female is great.

Male vs Female Great Pyrenees Temperament

Similar to how there are differences in size between males and females, there are also differences in temperament as well.

This is even truer for male dogs who have not been neutered. An intact male Great Pyrenees will be more territorial and excitable compared to a neutered dog or a female dog.

Females generally are calmer, more loyal, and affectionate. They love to cuddle more. Look at humans, it is the same, isn’t it?

Intact females are also different than neutered females. They go into heat two times per year. But generally speaking, females are more affectionate and love to be around the family more. Males might be a bit more independent.

Male vs Female Great Pyrenees Training

There are different things that are easier to train with a male dog and with a female dog. For example, male dogs learn to pee outside quicker than females. Why? Because their instinct is to mark the territory. So, the moment they go outside, their instinct kicks in. Females might need more time to learn that skill.

On the other hand, if you want to work on obedience training skills, it will be easier with a female. Why? Because females are more loyal and submissive. Males might be a bit more stubborn and independent.

Exercise Needs

This is one area where there is no difference whether you have a male or female dog. Yes, females tend to be calmer, but when it comes to playing and working out, there is no difference.

Both genders are high-energy dogs and need plenty of exercise. Remember, this is a working dog breed that needs to be active throughout the day.

Great Pyrenees might sleep more throughout the day. Why? Because their instinct is to be awake at night, when they need to protect their assets.

Daily walks and some play sessions will be enough to keep your Great Pyrenean dog tired. The mere fact they are awake at night is enough exercise for them.

Health and Care

These dogs are quite healthy. Similar to most working dogs, they tend to be healthy. Yes, because of their size, they might be prone to joint problems.

But if you get a Great Pyrenees puppy from a reputable breeder, there should be no issues.

Are They Good Family Dogs?

No matter if you get a male dog or a female dog, your household will enjoy their company. Great Pyrenees puppies make amazing family dogs because they are patient, gentle, and calm with children.

They might not be the most playful dog breed. If you want a playful dog, you should look elsewhere. These dogs are loving and devoted guardians. They will cuddle with children, but not play.

Do They Get Along With Other Pets?

Great Pyrenees dogs might be reserved with animals they do not know. If they grow up together, they will consider the other animal as part of the pack.

Yet, if they are not socialized with animals early on, they might be reserved. After all, this is a guardian that will protect his/her territory.

Final Words

At the end of the day, it depends on what you want from your dog. If you want an easier-to-train, docile, cuddlier dog, go for the female Great Pyrenees.

On the other hand, if you want a more loyal and protective dog, one that will intimidate intruders with his big size and demeanor, go for the male Great Pyrenees.
